Tricks & Tools for Self-Editing

There's always debate to be had about the balance between self-editing and hiring an editor. I believe in both. I have commented at length in another post on self-editing, and I don't want to post the same, so I thought of doing a Tricks of the Trade post to help self editors. I'll start of with my own so you get the idea.

Listen & Edit:

Use the "Text to Speech" function in programs like MS Word to read through your MS as you edit. Your eyes will often glance over typos, wrong word choice, or irritating repetitions because you know the book too well. But that horrible robotic voice will stumble over them, making your ears perk up. It's a handy way to spot mistakes in later stage editing/proofreading.

What tips have you got?
